Dear Monroe Families,
We hope you are enjoying your summer! We would like to welcome you back to a new and exciting school year at Monroe Elementary School! We look forward to seeing all of you, getting to know new families at our school, and hearing stories about your summer experiences. We are already working hard to make sure our academic programs for the 2016-17 continue being successful and our teachers are looking forward to meeting their new class of students.
Students return to school on Monday, August 15th. In the meantime, we would like to briefly share with you a sense of our focus for the 2016-17 school year, important upcoming dates and some updates.
Areas of Focus for 2016-17
The main area of focus for this upcoming school year will be to continue working together in community building and strengthening relationships. Three Community Building Meetings for families and also three Community Building Meetings for staff have been scheduled throughout the school year.
The dates for the Community Building Meetings for families are the following:
Friday, August 12th from 8:30 to 10:00 am in the Multi-Purpose room
Friday, November 4th from 8:30 to 10:00 am in the Multi-Purpose room
Friday, April 21st from 8:30 to 10:00 am in the Multi-Purpose room
We will also continue working on Literacy, Math, Language Acquisition, Positive Behavior Intervention Supports and Technology.
Thursday, August 11th: Class lists will be posted @ 3:00 pm by the main entrance
Friday, August 12th: Community Building Meeting #1 @ 8:30-10:00 am in the Multi-purpose Room
Saturday, August 13th: Kindergarten Orientation and Barbecue from 10:00 am-1:00 pm
Monday, August 15th: First day of instruction! School starts for students!
Week of September 12-16: Back-To-School Night (Exact date and time will be communicated as soon as possible)
Classroom Teachers: 19 amazing classroom teachers (86.36%) are returning to Monroe. They will teach the same grade level they were teaching last year with the exception of Aurora Torres who is going to have a new role as a support teacher.
4 amazing classroom teachers are joining our team: Della Wong (Kindergarten Biliteracy Chinese), Cristina Zugasti (Kindergaten Spanish Immersion), Mindy Chen (First Grade Biliteracy Chinese), and Javier Merino (First Grade Spanish Immersion).
Support staff new to Monroe: Other amazing non-classroom teachers and staff that is joining us are Pilar Romero (Bilingual Resource Specialist Program Teacher), Tedra Matthews (Literacy Coach), Carmen Alvarado (Bilingual Social Worker), and Suzie Berndt (Generalist Music Teacher).
Returning staff with a new role: Aurora Torres is our new K-5 Bilingual Academic Response to Intervention Facilitator for Literacy (ARTIF-Literacy), Kim Bailey is our new Academic Response to Intervention Facilitator for English Language Development (ARTIF-ELD), Sabrina Iwasaki is our new part time K-5 Behavior Response to Intervention Facilitator (B-RTIF/PBIS) and she will also continue being our K-5 Instructional Reform Facilitator (IRF) although part time this year.
New Administrator to Monroe: Jenny Gibson (Assistant Principal). Please, join us in welcoming back our returning staff and welcoming to Monroe our new staff members! An update will be provided once we know of any new staff member joining our school community.
YMCA After School Program
Site coordinator: Alexander Chavarria and Assistant Site Coordinator: Michelle Briceno.
Technology integration: Dakota Salazar will support with technology integration in the After School Program in addition to continue supporting our school during the day.
YMCA is also in the process of hiring a full time Bilingual Spanish Parent Engagement Coordinator to work year round at Monroe both during school hours and after school.
Reading Partners will continue providing one-on-one Literacy support after school.
As you return to Monroe, you will see that construction for the green area in our yard is completed. It looks great with the painted pathway and the beautiful mural in the background! We can’t wait to see a tree and many plants there very soon!
Please, complete and return your student emergency card to the office or your child’s teacher by the first day of school.
